Even machines with the most basic server configurations can successfully run Hubz. The Hubz Server requires a [free] Java Virtual Machine (JVM) installed. At a minimum the server should have a 333 Mhz Pentium CPU (or equivalent) or faster, and at least 128 MB RAM.
A Java Virtual Machine (or JVM) is the software that allows you to run Java applets or applications on your machine. In order to run the Hubz server you must first have a JVM installed on the server. Java Virtual Machines (JVMs) are available for most major platforms, including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux/UNIX, Solaris, etc.
We recommend using Suns JRE v1.3.1. There are currently versions of this VM available for Solaris, Linux, and Windows. It is available for free at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre. Mac OS X has Java 1.3.1 built in.
Because Hubz only requires a JVM to run, you can run Hubz on any OS that has a suitable JVM (must be Java 2 compliant). This basically includes all major operating systems, including: Windows NT/2000/XP, MacOS X, Linux and nearly all Unix-like operating systems.
Both the Hubz Server and the Hubz Applet have been tested on Mac OS X v10.x, and have performed very well.
Although Microsoft has discontinued the inclusion of Java with their operating system, Windows XP, and their Internet Browser, Internet Explorer 6.0, Java can still be installed on these systems. To install Microsofts Java go to http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_wm40.htm. You can install it manually from that address, or you will be prompted to install the Java plug-in the first time you visit a Java-enabled website. Follow the simple on-screen instructions to install this plugin.
The Hubz Applet supports nearly all major Java-enabled browsers. This includes, but is not limited to: Internet Explorer 4.xx/5.0/5.5/6.0, Netscape 4.xx/6.x, as well as AOL 5 and above.
To increase the Community Building aspects of your website, Hubz can easily be integrated with two other Digi-Net community products: DigiChat, our Java-based chat room software, and DigiPosts, our discussion forum. These three products can share a common membership database, so that your web site visitor can log in once and have access to all three products.
Although Hubz was specifically designed to be integrated with both DigiChat, and DigiPosts, it can also be integrated with your existing third-party membership database system. All profile information in Hubz, including name, e-mail, age, gender, etc., can be passed to the Hubz applet by way of applet parameters.
